The Ecumaster CAN Switch Board V3 is a compact CAN I/O module for building custom steering wheel panels, button boxes, and dashboard sub-clusters. At 25×25mm, it fits inside virtually any custom steering wheel hub or panel housing and replaces a complex multi-wire loom from the steering wheel to the ECU or PDM with a single 4-wire CAN connection (CAN H, CAN L, 12V, GND).
The board reads 8 momentary switch inputs (grounded when pressed) and 8 analogue inputs (0–5V, for rotary switches and potentiometers), and drives 4 low-side outputs at up to 0.5A for indicator LEDs. All switch states and analogue values are transmitted over CAN2.0B at configurable message IDs, allowing the receiving ECU or PMU to act on every button press and rotary position without additional wiring.
Important: the CAN Switch Board V3 is a bare PCB with no IP rating. It must be mounted inside a sealed housing or switch panel enclosure. It is not suitable for exposure to water or direct rain without a sealed enclosure.

What You Can Do With It
- Build a custom steering wheel button panel — 8 momentary buttons (pit limiter, launch, rain light, flag, neutral, etc.) transmitted over CAN; the ECU or PMU responds to each button state without individual signal wires back to the harness
- Add rotary switch inputs for driver-adjustable maps — 8 analogue channels read 0–5V rotary switches for map selection, traction control level, ABS sensitivity, or brake bias; values transmitted over CAN for ECU interpretation
- Drive indicator LEDs from the ECU or PMU — 4 low-side outputs receive CAN commands to light gear-shift LEDs, warning lights, or flag indicators directly from the ECU or PMU logic
- Combine multiple boards on one CAN bus — each board has its own configurable CAN ID; two boards on one bus gives 16 switch inputs, 16 analogue inputs, and 8 LED outputs — enough for a fully featured steering wheel
- Reduce harness complexity through slip rings — replacing 8+ individual signal wires with 4 CAN wires simplifies routing through a steering column slip ring or rotating electrical connector
Compatible Systems
The CAN Switch Board V3 is explicitly supported by ECUmaster EMU Black and ECUmaster PMU. Because it transmits standard CAN2.0B frames with configurable message IDs and frame structures, it is also compatible with any ECU or PDM that accepts custom CAN receive messages — including Link ECU G4X, Haltech Nexus, Emtron KV series, MoTeC M1, and others.

FAQ
How many CAN Switch Boards can I use on one bus?
Multiple boards can coexist on one CAN bus, each assigned a unique CAN ID in firmware. Two boards give 16 switch inputs, 16 analogue inputs, and 8 LED outputs. The practical limit is the receive buffer of the host ECU or PDM. For most steering wheel applications, one board is sufficient for 8 buttons plus 8 rotary channels.
Is the CAN Switch Board V3 waterproof?
No. The board is an unenclosed PCB with no published IP rating. It must be installed inside a sealed housing — a steering wheel panel enclosure, potted in resin, or mounted inside a sealed button box. If water ingress is a risk in the mounting location, use a sealed keypad instead, such as the Blink Marine PKP series (IP67).
Can I update the firmware on the CAN Switch Board V3?
Yes — firmware updates are applied via the CAN bus using the ECUmaster USB to CAN module and ECUmaster PC software. No physical connection to the board is required beyond the CAN bus wiring.
What is the difference between the CAN Switch Board and a CAN keypad like the Blink Marine PKP series?
The CAN Switch Board is a bare PCB for embedding inside a custom-built panel — the engineer designs the physical layout, chooses the switches and rotaries, and mounts everything in their own housing. The Blink Marine PKP keypads are complete sealed units (IP67) with pre-fitted backlit buttons in a finished aluminium housing — ready to panel-mount without building a custom enclosure.
