The AiM SmartyCam 3 Dual is a professional dual-camera video system for circuit racing applications where a single camera angle is not sufficient. Two external bullet cameras connect to the main processing unit via SMA cables — recording simultaneously from two independent viewpoints. Both streams are composited in real time into a single PiP (picture-in-picture) .MP4 file on one SD card, synchronised with CAN telemetry data from any connected AiM logger or ECU, without any manual alignment step.

The Dual shares the same global shutter CMOS sensor platform as the SmartyCam 3 GP: 1080p 60 fps H.264 encoding, 3G-SDI live output, IP65 rating, and Race Studio 3 analysis. Where the GP uses one external bullet camera, the Dual uses two. The main unit is correspondingly larger — 154.4 × 109.6 × 42 mm and 800 g — and adds a second independent CAN bus, allowing simultaneous connection to both an AiM logger (CAN 1) and an ECU (CAN 2).

Typical applications: endurance teams recording forward + rear views for traffic and incident documentation; GT3 driver coaching programmes correlating external track footage with interior driver input footage; open-wheel formula programmes monitoring a forward view alongside a pedal box or steering input camera.

What You Can Do with the SmartyCam 3 Dual

  • Record from two camera positions simultaneously with automatic real-time sync — no post-session alignment
  • Configure which bullet is the primary frame and which is the PiP inset in Race Studio 3; resize and reposition the inset window
  • Overlay live telemetry onto the composite video: speed, RPM, gear, throttle, brake, G-forces, lap time, and track map from any connected AiM logger
  • Connect directly to 2,000+ ECU protocols on CAN 2 without an AiM dash logger as intermediary
  • Stream live 3G-SDI video to a pit-wall monitor or broadcast encoder at 30 or 60 fps during the session
  • Install bullet cameras at two independent positions — wheel arch, A-pillar, rollcage tube, pedal box — while the processing unit mounts remotely
  • Specify mixed lens angles (67° + 84°, 67° + 120°) for purpose-specific dual coverage

Lens Angle Selection Guide

Lens Best for
67° Closed-roof GT, touring, saloon — minimises cockpit and A-pillar in the primary frame
84° Open and closed roof — wider track view; most versatile choice for both angles
120° Pedal box, driver interior, or open-wheel nose view — maximises field of view in close quarters

FAQ

Does the Dual record two separate video files or one combined file?

One combined PiP file on a single SD card. Both bullet camera streams are composited in real time by the main unit’s H.264 encoder into a single .MP4. There is no separate file per camera and no second SD card slot. In Race Studio 3, the PiP layout is configurable post-session: you can resize the inset window, swap which camera occupies the primary frame, or mirror either feed — without re-recording.

Can I fit different lens angles to each bullet camera?

Yes. The two SMA ports are independent. The XTRA stock SKUs (XS3DB6767L2L200 and XS3DB8484L2L200) are matched pairs, but a 67° + 84° or 67° + 120° combination can be ordered. Spare and alternative bullet cameras are available separately.

Does the SmartyCam 3 Dual have integrated GPS?

No. Neither the Dual nor the GP includes a GPS receiver. GPS position, lap timing, and the track map overlay require a CAN connection to an AiM device with GPS — the EVO5, MXS, MXP, MXG, or Solo 2 DL. Without a GPS source on CAN, the Dual records video and accelerometer data only.

What is the difference between the Dual and the GP?

The GP uses one external bullet camera. The Dual uses two, recording both simultaneously into one PiP composite. The Dual’s main unit is larger (154.4 × 109.6 × 42 mm vs GP’s 120.8 × 80.2 × 30.9 mm), weighs 800 g, and adds a second CAN bus for independent ECU and logger connections. Both share the global shutter CMOS sensor, 3G-SDI output, IP65 rating, and Race Studio 3 workflow.

Which lens combination is best for endurance racing?

For front + rear coverage: 84° + 84° — covers traffic and overtaking context from both ends of the car. For forward track + driver input coaching: 67° forward (track-centred, minimal cockpit intrusion) paired with 84° or 120° driver-facing for steering, throttle, and brake input analysis. Mixed-angle pairs are available on order.

What does the 3G-SDI output stream on the Dual?

The Dual’s SMA SDI connector outputs the PiP composite feed at 30 or 60 fps — the same combined two-camera view that is recorded to SD. It does not output two independent single-camera streams simultaneously. The SDI signal connects directly to a pit-wall monitor, streaming encoder (for live broadcast), or external multi-channel recorder.
