The AiM SmartyCam 3 Sport is the entry point into the SmartyCam 3 family. At 79.9 × 54 × 47 mm and 200 g, it is the most compact and lightest of the three SmartyCam 3 models — suited to applications where mounting space is limited and live broadcast is not required.
The Sport connects to any AiM logger (MXG, MXP, MXS, MXm, EVO5, PDM08/PDM32) or directly to a compatible ECU via CAN bus, overlaying telemetry data onto the recorded video in real time: speed, RPM, gear, throttle position, brake, G-forces, lap time, and track map. Overlay layout and data channels are configured in Race Studio 3. Combining video and data in a single analysable file in Race Studio 3 allows frame-by-frame comparison of driving inputs against logged telemetry — the same analysis workflow as the Corsa and GP.
The IP65-rated body with sapphire frontal glass handles rain and debris in circuit use. External power from the vehicle (9–15 V) is required for recording; the internal battery supports playback and menu navigation only. SD cards up to 2 TB are supported.
For builds generating sustained high-RPM vibration where rolling shutter artefacts are a concern, the SmartyCam 3 Corsa (global shutter CMOS) is the better choice.

FAQ
Does the Sport record without a logger connected?
Yes. The Sport records video to the SD card without any connected device. CAN connection to an AiM logger or compatible ECU is required only for data overlays. Without a data source, the camera records clean video.
Why might I choose the Corsa over the Sport?
The Corsa uses a global shutter CMOS sensor that eliminates the wave distortion produced by rolling shutter sensors under engine vibration. At sustained high RPM (6,000–9,000 rpm and above), the Corsa produces stable, clean video where the Sport may show motion artefacts. The Corsa housing (die-cast aluminium) is also more resistant to vibration fatigue over a full racing season. For track days and occasional club events at moderate RPM, the Sport is entirely adequate.
Does the Sport need external power to record?
Yes. External vehicle power (9–15 V) is required for video recording. The internal battery supports playback and menu navigation only. Wire the Sport to a switched 12 V circuit on your AiM PDM or a direct fused feed from the battery.
Which lens angle should I choose?
67° minimises the amount of cockpit and windscreen pillar visible in the frame — best for closed-roof cars. 84° offers a wider track view and works for both open and closed-roof vehicles. If in doubt, 84° is the more versatile choice.
