The Bosch Motorsport CAS-M Light uses a 76.0–77.0 GHz FMCW (Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave) radar to detect approaching vehicles from behind, measuring distance, relative closing speed, and lateral position (left or right of centreline). All three data values are broadcast via CAN at 50 Hz and 1 Mbaud to the driver display for LED-based warnings.
Single-object tracking: The CAS-M Light tracks one object at a time — the nearest approaching vehicle within the detection zone. All other detected objects are suppressed. The system provides a three-state LED warning: green LEDs (both sides) for large distance, yellow LEDs (both sides) for medium distance, and red LED (single side, left or right depending on object lateral position) for close approach. This display is rendered by the connected Bosch DDU — a DDU 9, DDU 10, or DDU 11 is required; the CAS-M Light does not include a standalone display or warning LEDs.
Detection range is up to 150 m, with the horizontal field of view narrowing as distance increases: 85° at 0–29 m, 70° at 29–46 m, 50° at 46–73 m, and 20° at 73–95 m. Radar operates in rain, darkness, and spray — conditions where mirrors and cameras alone fail.
All CAN distance and speed thresholds are configurable via CAN from the connected display or setup tool, allowing threshold adjustment to suit different racing categories and driver preferences. A pre-defined default threshold set based on Bosch Motorsport experience is provided for quick start-up.
Mounting note: The CAS-M Light must be mounted flush behind non-conductive bodywork (fibreglass, vinyl, Kevlar) with maximum 5 mm from sensor face to panel surface. Carbon fibre bodywork blocks the radar signal and is not suitable.
