The Bosch Motorsport GSS-2 measures the axial force applied to the gear shift rod by the driver and converts it to an analog voltage signal for the ECU. When the driver loads the gear lever — before the synchromesh engages and before the gearshift completes — the force sensor output rises above a threshold configured in the ECU. The ECU immediately cuts ignition (and optionally applies a throttle blip for downshifts), removes torque from the gearbox, and reinstates ignition as the shift completes.
This approach is faster and more precise than switch-based gear cut systems: the signal is proportional to the applied force, so the ECU receives continuous input about shift initiation, engagement progress, and completion. The ECU can distinguish between a full-effort upshift, a tentative partial load on the lever, and a loaded downshift — all from the same sensor.
The GSS-2 has “dual way functionality” — it detects both upshift (compressive force) and downshift (tensile force) through a single sensor body. The ratiometric analog output spans 0.4–4.5 V on a 5 V supply (0 V and 5 V reserved for fault detection), compatible with any ECU analog input.
Note: Exact connector type and specific force range (mounting torque, threshold force) are defined in the Bosch GSS-2 datasheet (document 68935051), which is available from Bosch Motorsport channel managers. Contact XTRA Motorsport for installation data before specifying into a new installation.
