GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) solenoid injectors require a brief high-voltage pulse — typically 60–80 V — to overcome the high fuel rail pressure and lift the injector needle rapidly during the opening phase. The Bosch Motorsport HPI5 generates this boost voltage internally (~65 V) from a 12 V vehicle supply and applies it to each injector channel in the fast-opening phase, then holds the injector open with a lower current. This allows the main ECU — which operates at 12 V logic — to manage GDI injection timing and duration while the HPI5 handles the high-voltage actuation.
The HPI5 supports up to 8 injector channels organised in 4 independent groups of 2. Within each group, only one injector fires at a time; across groups, overlapping injection is possible, enabling sequential GDI strategies up to 8 cylinders. One additional channel drives the Bosch HDP5 high-pressure fuel pump solenoid. Communication between the ECU and HPI5 is entirely via CAN — the ECU sends injection timing and duration commands, the HPI5 executes them and reports back.
The HPI5 is used with the Bosch Motorsport MS 6.3 EVO, MS 6.4 EVO, and MS 6.4P EVO ECUs (which include native HPI5 CAN protocol support), and with the Emtron KV12 (with GDI licence) via its CAN-based HPI5 integration.
