Bosch Motorsport Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) MS 50.4

23050.00  excl. VAT

The Bosch Motorsport VCU MS 50.4 is a dedicated vehicle control unit for motorsport applications requiring a separate processor for vehicle dynamics, transmission, active aerodynamics, and hybrid system management — functions that should not share CPU time with engine management. Its dual 866 MHz CPU architecture dedicates one processor entirely to the real-time control loop and a second entirely to data logging, preventing logging activity from affecting control response. SERCOS3 Ethernet provides guaranteed 1 ms latency to paired Bosch ECUs and devices.

The Bosch Motorsport VCU MS 50.4 is not an engine control unit — it is a vehicle-level processor designed to run alongside the MS 7.4 or MS 7.8 ECU, handling control functions that act on the vehicle as a whole rather than the engine alone. In GT3, GT endurance, LMP, and hybrid prototype applications, the complexity of vehicle management has outgrown what a single ECU can handle within its control cycle: ABS, traction control, stability control, active suspension management, active aerodynamics, sequential paddle-shift gearbox logic, hybrid energy management, and multi-device coordination all place competing demands on processor time and CAN bandwidth.

The VCU MS 50.4 solves this by providing a dedicated vehicle-level processor completely isolated from engine management. Two 866 MHz dual-core CPUs are used: one runs the real-time vehicle control loop and its MATLAB/Simulink Customer Code Area algorithms; the second is dedicated exclusively to data logging. This means logging activity — regardless of channel count or sample rate — cannot interrupt or delay the control CPU. The vehicle control response is deterministic at all times.

SERCOS3 real-time Ethernet connects the VCU to the ECU and other Bosch Motorsport devices with a guaranteed maximum latency of 1 ms. This is the communication channel for tight-loop coordination: the ECU sends torque state, throttle position, and gear information to the VCU at each control cycle; the VCU returns torque correction requests, stability intervention signals, and transmission shift commands with sub-millisecond delivery guarantee. Standard CAN cannot provide this latency guarantee.

Internal storage is 6 GB, with logging rates up to 800 kB/s standard and an optional 5 µs high-speed logging mode for transient event capture. Three Autosport motorsport connectors (AS618-35SN, 198 pins total) and IP67 sealing complete the motorsport-grade hardware specification.

What You Can Do With It

  • Run complex vehicle dynamics algorithms (traction, stability, active suspension) on a dedicated CPU without competing with engine management
  • Exchange real-time torque and stability data with the MS 7.4 or MS 7.8 ECU via SERCOS3 at guaranteed 1 ms latency
  • Log all vehicle channels at up to 800 kB/s without any impact on the control loop — dedicated logging CPU
  • Capture transient events at 5 µs resolution with the optional high-speed logging mode
  • Manage sequential paddle-shift gearbox logic with wheel speed and gear position inputs
  • Monitor 20 analog sensor channels plus 4 thermocouple inputs for suspension, brake, and aerodynamic data
  • Develop and deploy custom vehicle control algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink via the Customer Code Area

FAQ

What is the difference between the VCU MS 50.4 and an ECU?

An ECU manages the engine — fuel injection, ignition, lambda control, turbo management. The VCU MS 50.4 manages the vehicle — traction, stability, active suspension, gearbox logic, hybrid energy, active aerodynamics. In professional motorsport these functions are separate not only for processing load reasons, but because vehicle-level control laws respond to wheel slip, lateral acceleration, and gear state on timescales that require their own deterministic control loop.

Is the MATLAB/Simulink CCA required to use the VCU MS 50.4?

The Customer Code Area (CCA) is the primary means of deploying control algorithms to the VCU MS 50.4, since it is fundamentally a programmable vehicle controller rather than a preconfigured ECU. Bosch also provides a library of platform functions (traction, ABS assist, torque coordination) that can be configured in RaceCon without CCA code. For complex custom algorithms, MATLAB/Simulink with the CCA Hardware Upgrade is required.

What does SERCOS3 real-time Ethernet provide over standard CAN?

Standard CAN is a bus with collision-based arbitration — message delivery timing is not guaranteed to the microsecond. SERCOS3 is a cyclic real-time Ethernet protocol with guaranteed maximum latency of 1 ms per communication cycle. For functions like ECU-VCU torque coordination, where the VCU must know the engine’s instantaneous torque output at each control step, the determinism of SERCOS3 is essential.

Can the VCU MS 50.4 manage ABS?

The VCU MS 50.4 has the processing capability and wheel speed inputs to host ABS algorithms via the CCA. However, for series-mandated ABS the Bosch Motorsport ABS M5 is the dedicated system. Many teams use both: the ABS M5 for the ABS hydraulic actuation and the VCU for stability and traction coordination that integrates with the ABS state.

Is there a CAN-FD variant of the VCU MS 50.4?

Yes. A CAN-FD variant of the VCU MS 50.4 exists as a separate Bosch Motorsport product with its own part number. The standard SKU F02U.V02.965-02 is the conventional CAN version. Contact XTRA Motorsport to confirm which variant is appropriate for your system architecture.
